Mayors of various Utah communities say the public needs more time to comment on a proposed nuclear waste storage site on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation.

A public comment period on the site is due to end on Friday. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a draft environmental impact statement on the site but the mayors say issues of cost, tourism, and property values need to be considered more closely.

The Skull Valey Goshute tribe wants to store up to 40,000 tons of spent fuel from power plants all throughout the country. The tribe has already signed a lease agreement with Private Fuel Storage, a company representing eight electric utilities.

Along with other leaders including Governor Mike Leavitt, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said he opposes the site.
