Murkowski denies placing ANWR amendment

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2001

Senator Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) is denying he had anything to do with the introduction of an amendment to a defense spending bill that would open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling.

It was fellow colleague Jim Inhofe's (R-Okla.) doing alone, said Murkowski and aides. Murkowski on Wednesday had said on the Senate floor he was not trying to push ANWR drilling in a defense bill under consideration.

The bill will be debated today. Inhofe's spokesman said that doesn't mean his amendment will be considered.
