SEPTEMBER 7, 2000 The Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, an Alaska Native Corporation, is fighting the designation of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as a national monument, saying it will infringe on their economic development. Another Native group, the Gwich'in Steering Committee, supports the idea of the monument, however. They don't want the refuge used for any more oil development. Last month, President Jimmy Carter came to Alaska and supported the creation of a monument. Get the Story:
