A proposal for a mine near a sacred lake in New Mexico has gained the support of several local governments.

Catron County commissioners, the village of Reserve and the Southwest New Mexico Council of Governments say the mine near Zuni Salt Lake will provide jobs and create a domestic source of energy. The power that would be generated by the 80 million ton, 18,000-acre coal site would supply users in Arizona, not New Mexico.

Zuni Pueblo is protesting the mine because of fear it will dry up the sacred lake. The Interior Department has to approve the project and may do so soon.
