The National Marine Fisheries Service has finalized a new agreement with the Makah Nation of Washington regarding the tribe's controversial whale hunt.

The agreement was part of legal action animal rights groups and former Washington Congressman Jack Metcalf (R) filed against the government. But while the lawsuit was aimed at stopping the hunt, it resulted in less restrictions on the hunting season and the location of the tribe's "usual and accustomed" whaling area.

The tribe could take to the waters as early as next week, once the NMFS publishes Federal Register notice instituting the quota on the number of whales the tribe can hunt. Up to five a year can be taken or seven struck, whichever comes first.
