The South Dakota Farmers Union has endorsed a petition calling for the legalization of industrial hemp in the state.

A group called SoDak-NORML, an affiliate of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, has a petition to put the issue on the 2002 ballot. It needs 13,010 signature by May.

Industrial hemp has a wide number of purposes but it cannot be legally grown in the United States without approval from the federal government. Growers must also adhere to strict requirements.

The Oglala Lakota Tribe has legalized hemp on the Pine Ridge Reservation but the crops have been destroyed and confiscated by federal authorities.
