WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2002 In 1899, industrialist Edward Harriman organized a crew of scientists, writers and artists to visit the Alaska coast. Organized by Smith College in Maine and supported by a number of organizations, schools and companies, a recreation of the route taken was made last year. Native villages in both Alaska and Russia were part of the tour, which will be the subject of a PBS documentary "The Harriman Alaska Expedition Retraced." A companion book is being released.
