Norton promotes something 'new'

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2002 Secretary of Interior Gale Norton spoke to the National Press Club on Wednesday about something she called "new environmentalism." The idea apparently involves trying to make corporations and citizens do good things for the environment without making them do anything. As one example, she touted a dying oil field on the Oklahoma-Kansas border she visited last year that generates mineral royalties for the Osage Nation. She said the setup was a "win-win" situation because oil, Indians and buffalo appear to co-exist in the prairie where the grass isn't as tall as its name suggests. She didn't mention the tribe has filed a billion dollar lawsuit against her department, alleging mismanagement of trust funds. Norton was asked later about delayed royalty payments and said her department was trying to get them out on time. Her speech is available below. Listen to the Speech:
