Details of Cheney oil meeting sought

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2002

The General Accounting Office last week filed a lawsuit seeking to force the White House to disclose information about the energy task force Vice President Dick Cheney chaired.

Subject and names of persons who met with Cheney or the task force are the major focus of the request. As one example, two oil executives met with Cheney, an oilman himself, in early February to lobby him on oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

The White House says the details of the meeting, like others, shouldn't be disclosed. But Democrats, environmentalists and some Republicans say the Bush administration will have to give up the information anyway.
