Klamath report being evaluated

Secretary of Interior Gale Norton said on Monday that decisions affecting the use of water in the Klamath Basin will take into account a critical scientific review being released this week.

Although she said it was premature to say what effect the National Academy of Sciences report would have, she said she was troubled by its conclusions. The report, to be released officially tomorrow but which was leaked to numerous media, says the science behind shutting off water to non-Indian farmers on the Oregon-California border was faulty.

Norton's remarks came in response to a reporter's question about the issue at yesterday's budget briefing.
