Two northern California tribes have asked a federal judge to restore water to their fisheries.

The Hoopa Valley Tribe and the Yurok Tribe want increased flows from the Trinity River diverted. The tribes have water rights under a treaty but the supply has historically gone to non-Indian communities.

Hoping to change that, former Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt in December 2000 signed a decision restoring water to the tribes to protect their fish. In response to a challenge, U.S. District Judge Oliver Wanger modified the flows.
