It's Saddam Hussein v. ANWR
MONDAY, MARCH 25, 2002

The senators from Alaska and their allies have frequently invoked Saddam Hussein and Iraq as a reason to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling.

But environmentalists doubt whether the oil in the refuge will reduce dependence on a member of the so-called "axis of evil." They cite a Department of Energy report, prepared at the request of drilling advocate Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska), which shows dependence on foreign oil would drop from 62 percent to 60 percent.

Murkowski counters that the study was limited and that dependence on crude would drop from 67 percent to 62 percent.
