The Hopi Tribe and a Texas company have signed an agreement to consider building a 1,200-megawatt, coal-fired generating station on the tribe's Arizona reservation.

The tribe says the plant would be environmentally friendly. Chairman Wayne Taylor also said it would not require taking water from the tribe's aquifer.

The aquifer has been of great concern to the tribe. Peabody Coal, which has mine Hopi and Navajo land since the 1960s, draws 5 million gallons of water from the source to transport coal slurry to a power plant hundreds of miles away.
