Tribe joins fight on waste rules

MONDAY, MARCH 4, 2002

The Yakama Nation of Washington has joined a high-profile fight over the disposal of nuclear waste.

The tribe filed a brief in federal court on a lawsuit against the Department of Energy. Environmentalists contend the department's plans to leave nuclear waste in the ground at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington violates federal law.

The reservation is located on former land ceded by the Yakama Nation in a treaty.
