ANWR: Who is right?
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6, 2002

Opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas development is one of the most debated topics in the nation these days, with both sides offering up their own "spin," as The Washington Post puts it, to promote their arguments.

So who is right? As is always the case, there's some truth in everything that is said. But according to a U.S. Geological Survey scientist quoted by the paper, each side takes the facts and runs with them.

"People use the facts in pretty strange ways," said Kenneth Bird, a geologist. "It seems like there's always something missing in the analysis."

For Secretary of Interior Gale Norton's part, the latest analysis is that ANWR is ugly. In a speech yesterday in Arkansas and in a videotape she is distributing -- one that was produced by a pro-drilling lobby group -- she depicts the refuge as "not beautiful."

ANWR will be a centerpiece of the Senate debate on an energy policy bill.
