Abraham pushes domestic drilling

THURSDAY, APRIL 4, 2002

Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham on Wednesday said the United States needs to reduce its dependence on oil from the Middle East and drill more federal lands.

But Abraham seemed to say opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) won't solve the nation's needs. So he suggested tapping other international sources, such as Kazakhstan in the former Soviet Union.

Congress resumes its spring break next week and will debate an energy policy bill. The measure doesn't include an ANWR provision.
