A House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Tuesday voted to approve Yucca Mountain in Nevada as the nation's nuclear waste repository.

The 24-2 vote sends the proposal to the full committee. A full vote on the House floor, where support of the site is considerable, could come next week.

Support is not as strong in the Senate, where the state of Nevada has the best chances of having the site rejected. The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hold hearings on the matter.

Gov. Kenny Guinn (R) vetoed the site earlier this month. State officials, politicians and area tribes oppose storing up to 77,000 tons of highly radioactive nuclear waste on traditional Shoshone land.
