In a case expected to take years to resolve, the Haida First Nation has laid claim to the Queen Charlotte Islands in British Columbia.

The band seeks control of the land and off-shore areas. The area is rich with minerals.

The Mi'kmaq First Nation in Membertou, Nova Scotia, is watching the case because bands there could lay claim to off-shore areas, said an attorney.
