FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2001 After a compromise was reached with President Bush, the House on Thursday night passed a scaled-down version of a patients' rights bill that the Senate approved last month. Bush has threatened to veto the Senate version because he believes it opens the door to widespread litigation against managed health care plans. The House compromise allows lawsuits in state courts, but limits judgment awards to $1.5 million and limits how a case can proceed. The vote on the bill was 226 to 203, with all Republicans approving. Get the Story:
