Indian Country needs to be better aware of HIV and AIDS to help prevent an epidemic and to encourage treatment, health experts told the National Congress of American Indians on Tuesday.

Although the number of known cases of HIV / AIDS in Indian Country is around 3,000, the number has skyrocketed in recent years. Stigmas surrounding the disease contribute to the problem, said experts.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the fastest growing segment of AIDS patients and HIV infection is Native youth.
