Winnebago Tribe combats diabetes

TUESDAY, APRIL 9, 2002

The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska has taken a traditional approach to combating type 2 diabetes, a disease in epidemic stages in Indian Country.

The tribe's Whirling Thunder wellness program encourages healthy eating and exercise. Harvard University selected the initiative as a finalist in its Honoring Nations program.

Other projects include talking circles to help tribal members, who may resist contemporary methods of treatment, make lifestyle changes. Reintroducing traditional foods like buffalo is also part of the effort.

The Winnebago Reservation is located in northeastern Nebraska.
