In The Hoop
FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
The T-Word - You were supposed to have died in the 1970s but somehow you keep reappearing. Whether you're called "decertification" or "limiting," you're alive and kicking.

The Department of Interior Bison - Neutered by the Clinton administration, things are looking up for your genitalia under Auntie Gale!

Inupiat Eskimos - You own a $1 billion corporation but pictures of children in snow are better than executives in suits when it comes to opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. Thank Frank for the rebranding.

Kevin Gover - You're a better Assistant Secretary when you're out of office.

The Losers
Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb - The minute your back is turned, they ambush you. You better check yourself!

Klamath Tribes - No one cares that you've gone without water for decades yet everyone gets up in arms when white people are denied for one season and can't buy potato seeds.

Secretary Gale Norton - You're on the DL and making conciliatory gestures but we know what you're really hiding.

The Indian Estate - You've grown by just five million acres in the past 50 records. A dismal record.

In The Middle
Indian Schools - Will privatization work? Will cutting funds work? Why not try everything.

New York Tribes - So much bickering over some lousy casinos. Oh, and the promise of a few billion bucks.

Pequot Tribes - They just don't give up, don't they?

Idaho Tribes - All your victories can be wiped away with the stroke of a pen. Isn't life grand?
