In The Hoop
FRIDAY, JULY 27, 2001

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means its time for the weekly list of who were the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
The Navajo Code Talkers - For inspiring President Bush to recognize your duties and to acknowledge the forgotten legacy of Native Americans. He won't remember next week, though.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs - For ridding themselves of the political baggage known as former Chief Information Officer Dom Nessi.

Bad tribal casino deals - For being endorsed by National Indian Gaming Commission Chairman Montie Deer and Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.). Give away all your money, tribes.

NIGC Commissioners - For sneaking by new regulations on Class II / Class III gaming with such verbose language that nobody knows what you are doing. Thanks, moderately-priced attorney representing several Indian tribes in Oklahoma and Florida!

Racism - We guess it does pay to attack Alaska Natives with a paint-ball gun and capture it all on videotape.

Natay - For making your own Long Walk. And for promising not to rap about it.

The Losers
Other Indian Code Talkers - Where's your award! Where's your movie!

The National Park Service - For inheriting the political baggage known as Dom Nessi. Reports of imploding bison in Yellowstone have been greatly exaggerated, however.

Lovers of Long Hair - For having to deal with the loss of Adam Beach's locks. We know you'll make it through the ordeal, though.

Top-level Department of Interior officials - For luring Indianz.Com to your office with the promise of information but not willing to take credit, or the blame, for it.

BIA Deputy Commissioner Sharon Blackwell - For making Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) mad. But we hear he wasn't so happy at other Congressional hearings that day either.

K.Go and Mike A. - Your last-minute decisions are being revoked and scrutinized. What about all your other ones?

In The Middle
Mexicans - Bush wants to grant you some form of legal residency but the Senate doesn't want you driving trucks up here. Who will you not vote for now?

Bad parents - Its your fault that products fail, says consumer nominee Mary Sheila Gall.
