Ho-Chunk Inc., the economic development corporation of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, has been chosen as a finalist for the Honoring Nations award of the American Indian Economic Development program at Harvard University.

Ho-Chunk Inc. was among eight receipients of an award for excellency in tribal government. Lance Morgan, CEO of Ho-Chunk Inc. and a Winnebago tribal member, was on hand at the National Congress of American Indians annual conference in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Tuesday evening to receive the award.

In under six years, Ho-Chunk Inc. has grown from a one employee experiment to a $30 million tribal enterprise. Its holdings include hotels, a product distribution company, and two Internet web sites -- AllNative and Indianz.Com.

The Harvard program chose Ho-Chunk as a finalist for being able to separate business from tribal politics. Morgan said this distinction, a unique situation among tribes, has helped Ho-Chunk Inc. achieve success.

of the $10,000 prize, Morgan said he hopes to purchase mouse pads to reward some employees.
