NOVEMBER 24, 2000 The Bureau of Indian Affairs plans on issuing preliminary findings on November 30 for two bands of the Nipmuc Tribe based in Massachusetts. The Nipmuc Tribe is recognized by the state and petitioned for acknowledgement in 1980. But in 1996, the Chaubunagungamaug band separated from the petition and it and the Hassanamisco band are being considered separately. The scenario is similar to that of the Eastern Pequot and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribes of Connecticut. Both live on the same reservation but petitioned and won preliminary recognition separately.
