APRIL 27, 2000

A group of Indian farmers in South Dakota have filed a $19B lawsuit against the Department of Agriculture. The suit alleges that the USDA discriminated against American Indian farmers between 1981 and 1999.

Their attorney said complaints of racism by Indian farmers went unheard because then President Reagan closed the department's civil rights office in 1984.

The suit is Keeps Eagle v. Glickman, Secretary of Agriculture.
