MAY 25, 2001

The Seminole Tribal Council on Thursday voted unanimously to suspend Chief Jim Billie, who has led the Florida tribe for more than two decades.

Billie will be suspended until the council learns the outcome of a sexual harassment suit filed by an ex-employee and the results of an audit of the tribe's finances.

Members of the council have become involved in disputes with Billie in recent weeks and have been increasingly critical due to rumors of an FBI investigation into the financial dealings of tribal employees.

The council has five members, including Billie. Billie did not attend the meeting.
