Repatriation panel supported

Tribal leaders throughout Indian Country are supporting a new proposal that would replace the current repatration committee created by the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) of 1990 with a panel of tribal officials.

A key concern pushing the proposal is the repatriation of "culturally unidentifiable" artifacts. Chickasaw Nation Lt. Gov. Jefferson Keel, the proposal's author, believes the panel could decide the fate of these artifacts more quickly rather than let the items sit in a museum.

The Chickasaw Nation and Oklahoma and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma sponsored a repatriation summit, held earlier this month.
