Crow tribe goes on firing frenzy
JULY 13, 2000

The Crow Tribe of Montana sent at least 130 employees packing on Tuesday, July 11, as a result of new chairman Clifford Bird in Ground's attempt to make the tribal government a leaner one.

Many fired expressed shock and surprise at the tribe's actions. One fired said an official came through a office and handed out letters to several hundred unlucky "Nomee Administration Tribal Employees," referring to Clara Nomee, the ousted and controversial leader.

The tribe defended the firings, saying there were just too many employees than the budget could handle. There were 800 employees as of July 1.

The changes are just one of many facing the tribe. They've already voted to reform the constitution and renegotiate their water compact with the state.
