Nipmuc tribal members battle for control

MONDAY, AUGUST 6, 2001

Angry members of the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts are calling for the ouster of the current tribal council due to an agreement signed with a gaming company.

The tribe, recognized only by the state at this time, wants to open a casino and teamed up with Lakes Gaming. Under the agreement, Lakes Gaming will fund the tribe's push to acheive federal recognition as well as manage a potential casino.

Some tribal members say the agreement signs away the tribe's future. They want an entirely new election for the council.
