Dispute continues over land claims

Even though the Department of Justice has dropped the names of private landowners in New York from several land claim lawsuits, tribal lawyers say the action doesn't affect tribal claims.

During the Clinton administration, the Justice Department sought to add private landowners to the land claims of the Seneca, Oneida, St. Regis Mohawk and Cayuga nations. Officials then dropped the effort earlier this year after complaints by lawmakers and state officials and after a federal judge denied adding landowners to the Oneida Nation suit.

The tribes, however, say they can sue whomever they like.
