TUESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2001 A reported two dozen residents of the Connecticut town of North Stonington voted on Monday night to spend an additional $135,000 to continue fighting two Pequot tribes. Along with two other towns, North Stonington is opposing the federal recogition of the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe. The three towns last week submitted a 380-page report and 1,500 documents contesting the tribes' claims. Among the document submitted by the towns are laws, treaties and records which show the two tribes were dependent wards of the English government, and later, the state. Therefore, the towns say, the tribes have not exercised political power over tribal members. Federally recognized tribes have been treated much the same way by the United States government.
