At a breakfast sponsored by The Christian Science Monitor on Wednesday, White House Office of Management and Budget Director Mitch Daniels chided the Department of Interior for a budget request it made to beef up its homeland security.

Daniels said that one of the first requests for $40 billion in emergency terrorist money was for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. "I do remember that among the very first ones to arrive – they were very quick – was one to intensify security at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, a well known terrorist target," he is quoted as saying.

Daniels said President Bush would boost terrorism funds next year to at least $24 billion.

BIA and tribal law enforcement are responsible for border security in many areas, including the Tohono O'odham Nation spanning the Mexico-U.S. border. Tribes are attending a border security conference in Washington, D.C., today with Attorney General John Ashcroft as the keynote speaker.
