Mark Chino was president of the Mescalero Apache Nation of New Mexico for a brief short weeks last year before the tribe's council invalidated the election that secured him the top spot.

Now, he's planning to challenge a subsequent election which saw him lose to incumbent Sara Misquez. "I owe this to every tribal member who believed in me, supported me, and voted for me," he said in a statement quoted by the Associated Press.

In a November 6 election, Chino defeated Misquez by a vote of 590 to 523. The election was thrown out when a challenge over voting machines versus voting ballots was raised by a losing candidate.

Then, in a December primary, Chino beat Misquez by a vote of 386 to 382. But earlier this month, Misquez emerged the winner by a vote of 717 to 484.

Chino is the son of the late and former president Wendell Chino.
