The Supreme Court today declined to consider whether the Miami Nation of Indiana is a tribe for federal purposes.

The action lets stand an appeals court decision which said the tribe ceased to exist after World War II. The tribe could seek Congressional acknowledgment.

The Supreme Court today also declined to review an appeal by the Penobscot Nation and the Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine. The tribes have been seeking federal intervention in their fight to keep internal documents from being made public under the state's freedom of information act.

The 1st Circuit Court of Appeals refused to get involved. Today's action lets stand that decision.

The Supreme Court in November previously let stand another decision which ordered the tribes to hand over the documents.
