Money budgeted to fight tribes

THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 2002 The Connecticut town of North Stonington has budgeted $100,000 to continue fighting three Pequot tribes. The town wants to spend $60,000 against the federal recognition bids of the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe. Both are due a final decision this summer. The town is anticipating spending $40,000 to fight the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation over land-into-trust. The tribe plans on withdrawing an application for 165 acres but the town is including the money as a precaution. Get the Story:
