The Bureau of Indian Affairs needs to review all of its pending federal recognition decisions, Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) says.

In a question and answer held at a local meeting yesterday, Dodd says legislation he has introduced to reform the process has been favorably received by the Senate Indian Affairs Committee and tribes. He says a hearing will be held soon.

But pending legislative action, Dodd says the BIA should "put the brakes on, go back and review all the applications pending, especially those that have received preliminary approval." He goes on to say: We've been told by the head of the BIA that the system is so broken, so flawed, that even its own people have no confidence in it."

Dodd's remarks at the Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments were published today in The Norwich Bulletin.
