TUESDAY, APRIL 2, 2002

The newly recognized Cowlitz Tribe of Washington isn't planning on using a land claim settlement fund in the immediate future.

Tribal members were paid $1.5 million by the Indian Claims Commission. The money has grown to $12 million in the past 30 years.

The Bush administration's budget includes no funds in fiscal year 2003 to help the tribe. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb has zeroed out the new tribes account.

The tribe has a 152-acre request for an initial reservation.
