A federal judge in Oregon on Wednesday rejected the Bush administration's attempt to block an assisted suicide law.

U.S. District Judge Robert Jones had harsh words for Attorney General John Ashcroft in the ruling. Ashcroft angered many last year when he said the Department of Justice would prosecute doctors who helped patients die.

The law was approved by voters in Oregon through an initiative process. Patients can ask doctors to administer lethal doses of drugs.

Jones issued a permanent injunction barring action from being taken against doctors who use the law. The Bush administration is considering an appeal.
