The Bureau of Indian Affairs appears to be hedging on a court-imposed deadline to resolve the federal recognition petitions of two Connecticut tribes.

The BIA agreed to a June 4 deadline last fall. But documents filed in federal court recently claim a final date wasn't established.

The documents nevertheless say the BIA is on track to finalizing the petitions of the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe. The Clinton administration granted preliminary recognition to both tribes in 2000.

The state of Connecticut opposes the tribes' petitions.
