Congress wants settlement of trust suit

OCTOBER 27, 2000

Matt Kelley, the Associated Press writer who will create a story about an Indian topic, no matter how big or small, reports that Congress wants a settlement to the trust fund lawsuit against the Department of Interior.

Congress recently passed the 2001 Interior Appropriations bill. Along with the bill, both houses say a settlement of the lawsuit against the Interior should be made.

The idea that Congress wants resolution to the issue isn't novel with the passage of the bill. In 1994, Congress passed a trust reform act in hopes of fixing the system, but reform was impeded by Interior officials, according to a Special Master assigned to the case.
