JUNE 25, 2001

Spokespersons for the Governors of Massachusetts and Connecticut say they are open to discussing the possibility of hosting a casino owned by the Nipmuc Nation.

So far, though, the tribe isn't talking about its economic development plans. The tribe is reportedly seeking to buy land in Connecticut near the Massachusetts border and has teamed up with Lakes Gaming on a possible casino.

One band of the Massachusetts tribe received preliminary federal recognition in January. But the Bush administration has put it on hold pending review by the President's political designates.
