Ex-Nipmuc leader criticizes actions

JUNE 5, 2001

The former chairman of the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts on Monday criticized the current tribal leadership for letting an outside adviser guide its decisions.

Ron "Little Crow" Henries says Guy Conrad has basically deceived the tribe with "fantasyland" talks about a casino. The tribe is allegedly looking into buying land in Connecticut for a proposed gaming facility.

It is unclear whether the tribal leaders who spoke to the Norwich Bulletin or the Boston Globe, who first reported the alleged casino discussions, are members of the Nipmuc band which received preliminary federal recognition. One band was denied preliminary acknowledgment in January by acting Assistant Secretary Michael Anderson.

The decision is on hold pending review by the Bush administration.
