Trump to fight lobbying subpoenas

SEPTEMBER 20, 2000

A lawyer for gaming mogul Donald Trump said he will fight attempts by the New York State Lobbying Commission to force Trump and others to testify about alleged illegal lobbying practices.

Trump admitted to funding a group which created newspaper, television, and radio ads characterizing the St. Regis Mohawk as criminals. The commission ruled that his donation is considered lobbying, but Trump did not report his involvement.

Trump also helped underwrite a lawsuit brought by two state legislators who are fighting the state over the approval of the Mohawk's gaming compact. The commission is investigating whether or not monetary contributions by Trump are considered an illegal gift.

An appellate court in August ruled that the lawsuit could proceed without naming the St. Regis as party. Previous decisions threw out the suit because the tribe couldn't be sued without its consent.
