Battles continue on Neb. gaming

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2002

Nebraska state lawmakers on Thursday continued to debate whether to allow expanding gaming.

One bill to create gaming "buffer zones" on the borders of state that do allow casinos failed. Lawmakers also rejected a proposal to allow five non-Indian race tracks to have slot machines.

That leaves an amendment to the state's constitution on the table. If the Legislature approves it, the measure will be placed before voters.

Meanwhile, two voter initiatives continue to be circulated in hopes of appearing on the November ballot as well. Both would allow video slot machines at non-Indian facilities, which would essentially legalize them for tribes.
