FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2002 The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports today of spirited discussion at the National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA) conference in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. Rep. Chris Shays (R-Conn.), best known as the co-author of the campaign finance reform bill, debated tribal leaders about gaming issues. But unlike showdowns in Congress where he has been known to cry after being beat up by his fellow GOPs, Shays appeared to hold his own and was criticized for introducing a bill to require state legislative approval of gaming compacts. Earlier that day, the paper reports that Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) said he would vote against the bill. Rahall is the ranking member of the House Resources Committee. Get the Story:
