La. senator opposes Choctaw casino

TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 2002

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) is urging Secretary of Interior Gale Norton to reject a casino proposed by the Jena Band of Choctaws.

Landrieu said she will put her objections into writing. Colleague Sen. John Breaux (D-La.) already did so but didn't say he was opposed.

Gov. Mike Foster has signed a compact with the tribe, which was recognized in the mid-1990s and has no land. The agreement is contingent on the Bureau of Indian Affairs taking land into trust for the tribe.

The BIA is set to decide this week on the issue.
