WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10, 2002

New York played host to its first gaming summit on Tuesday.

The approval of six new casinos was the talk of the event, with state and tribal leaders in attendance. Gov. George Pataki (R) is authorized to finalize a compact with the Seneca Nation for three casinos and make deals for three other facilities in the Catskills.

Negotiations continue on the Seneca deal, which includes off-reservation casinos. The St. Regis / Akwesasne Mohawk Tribe and the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans of Wisconsin have each filed a land-into-trust applications in the Catskills.
