Conn. candidate: Town is wicked witch

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2001

In an interview published by The New London Day on Thursday, a candidate for local office likens the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation's casino to Auntie Em's cottage being "dropped in our lap."

But what William Peterson, running unopposed for Selectmen of North Stonington, may not have realized is that his Wizard of Oz analogy wasn't quite flattering to his own town. The cottage, Oz watchers will remember, was dropped on a bad witch.

Therefore, the Pequot Tribe -- according to the Oz allegory -- must be aligned with forces of good. There's no place like home.

Peterson goes on to the say the tribe should compensate the town financially for the casino. He neglects to mention, or the paper does not report, that the tribe gives 25 percent of its slot machine revenue to the state.

Other candidates running for office in the town say fighting the Mashantucket Tribe and other tribes is a priority.
