"This hearing of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on the nomination of Gale Norton to be secretary of the interior will now come to order.

SEN. GORDON SMITH:
What is your position on the Endangered Species Act

NORTON: I think my record is clear on that, senator. In 1995, I signed a legal brief calling for the provisions of the Endangered Species Act to be greatly abbreviated. Under my proposal, protections of the habitat for endangered species would not be required. If the spotted owl could not survive without the forest, well, that's his problem..."
